How to make money selling your videos

I’m no expert but over the past few weeks I have sold several videos and I’m going to share my success story so you can make money also. To be honest I never made a video for anyone but myself.  When I first started gator wrestling there wasn’t all the alligators shows like there are now. I had Steve Irwin for inspiration but I didn’t start wrestling with hopes of getting a TV show. I wanted to work with gators because it’s a living dinosaur that many people are afraid of.  So far I have over 165 videos on my Youtube and Vimeo accounts. Of those so far I have sold a whopping 4 videos. But the 4 that I have sold have all been my most recent videos. I know I have better content in my older videos but looking back the quality of the video’s is far from where I have progressed to now. So my first piece of advise would be to get a good camera and use it and use it often. When I first got my gopro I would only turn it on when I went to the gator farm. Now I play with my gopro and the settings on a weekly basis. I watch videos of others and get ideas for camera angles and what I want to capture on screen. My next piece of advise is buy more batteries and memory cards and record everything. I’ve missed some great stuff because I was trying to save space on a memory card or shutting the camera off to keep the battery longer.  Next is a step I didn’t use but now that I know I do. Reach out to companies who showcase stuff that you like to shoot. I work with several companies and each wants something different so it makes it easier to shop my content around.  BarCroft and Caters News love stuff that no one else has seen or been released yet. News Flare tends to like the cute and cuddly stuff. The last bit of advice I have for you is to keep your content private until you have reached out to these people and know if they are interested in your material or not. These companies want to be able to sell your content as an exclusive. If you get something great and go home and load it onto youtube or facebook and share with everyone you won’t make a dime because once it’s out and about for everyone to see it loses it’s value.  Remember at the end of the day it’s hard work and knowledge that will make you some money.  The money I’ve made won’t allow me to quit my day job but it does make paying for some of my adventures a bit easier and in the end of the day I’m making videos for me so anything I make off them is great.  I’m happy to help and if you have any questions or comments please don’t be afraid to reach out. And do yourself a favor and make a Vimeo account.
